The young Count Zinzendorf had a profound spiritual experience while on his wanderjahr:  while visiting in Dusseldorf, he saw a painting by Italian artist Domenico Feti.  Titled Ecce Homo ("Behold the Man"), the painting shows the whipped Christ with crown of thorns.  The painting  has an inscription in Latin at the bottom of the canvas: Ego pro te haec passus sum Tu vero quid fecisti pro me: "This have I done for thee; now what wilt thou do for me?"  He was moved by the painting, and his deep awareness of the grace of Christ led him to dedicate his life to the service of the Savior.

Domenica Feti (1589 – 1623) was a prolific and talented Italian painter. Despite his short life he painted many variations of Ecce Homo, which was apparently a good seller. There are numerous variations in museums across Europe.  The actual painting that Zinzendorf saw now resides in Bayerische Staatsmuseum in Munich.
